A Season of Psalms - Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 103:1-5

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

When I’m not drinking coffee (which is hardly ever), I drink green tea. According to studies, green tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet because of its many benefits: it’s loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that improve brain function, promote weight loss, lower the risk of cancer, and reduce the effects of cardiovascular disease. Studies have also shown that green-tea drinkers are likely to live longer than non-tea drinkers. I’m grateful for church members who stock the kitchen pantry with both coffee and green tea for the pastor!

Like green tea, being a child of God has its benefits. He forgives all of our iniquity (v. 3); He heals our diseases (v. 3); He redeems us (v. 4); He crowns us with steadfast love and mercy (v. 4); He satisfies us with good things that renew our strength (v. 5). For what God has done, the psalm tells us to “bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” Read further in the psalm and you’ll discover more reasons to shower Him with praise: He works righteousness and justice (v. 6); He is merciful and gracious (v. 8); He shows compassion to those who fear Him (v. 13). His love is higher than the heavens, and He separates our sins as far as the east is from the west. Great is the measure of our Father’s love for us!

How do we experience the blessings of God? By trusting Him and obeying His voice. Deuteronomy 28:2: “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.” When we hear His voice and carry out His commands, not only will we be blessed in our obedience, but our souls will return praise to our Maker and Sustainer and shout, “Bless the Lord, O my soul!” Want happiness in Jesus? There’s no other way but to trust and obey.

Pray with me:

Father, You are so good to me, and I’m grateful for Your steadfast love that has no end. Today and every day, tune my heart to sing Thy praise. I bless You in Jesus’ name, Amen.
