A Season of Psalms - Psalm 122:1-2
“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’ Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem!”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before the throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee My God,
I commune as friend with friend!
Fanny J. Crosby wrote these wonderful words, and I often think of Psalm 122 when I read them. I wonder if David caught the scent of “pure delight” when it was time to go to the house of the Lord. As worshippers ascended the road to Jerusalem (hence the title “Song of Ascents”), they would see the city of Jerusalem, the city that God had chosen to make His dwelling. It was wonderful to be there!
I have to confess, I always get excited when I come to worship on Sunday. It’s my favorite day of the week by far. Why? Because I get to be with God, and I get to be with God’s people. For me, it doesn’t get any better than that. As I ascend the steps from the parking lot into the foyer, I’m about to step into God’s house and I know that today, God is going to show Himself among His people. There’s no doubt that I’m about to “commune as friend with friend!” Do you feel the same?
