A Season of Psalms - Psalm 136:1
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the debut of the Energizer Bunny. This pink rabbit wearing sunglasses and banging on a drum is the spokesperson (spokesbunny?) for Energizer batteries which, according to the tagline, “keeps going and going and going.” In the early days of the commercials, the bunny would wander from place to place and interrupt whatever was happening. Nothing could stop the Energizer Bunny. Energizer batteries are purported to have a long life, but would you believe that its battery sales actually dipped during the early years of the commercials? I guess you could say sales “kept dropping and dropping and dropping…”
Aren’t you grateful that the love of the Lord “keeps going and going and going?” The love of the Lord has no end! The author of this psalm (presumably David) feels the same about the steadfastness of the Lord’s love. In fact, Psalm 136 is actually a companion to the previous psalm, Psalm 135, in which you’ll find many of the same words and similar themes. Theologian James Mays calls Psalms 135 & 136 as “partners in praise.” Psalm 136 was most likely a community hymn used in worship, where the leader would say “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good” and the congregation would echo “for his steadfast love endures forever.” 26 times this pattern occurs. It keeps going and going and going, but unlike battery life which will eventually run out, the psalm reminds us that God’s steadfast love will continue.
God has done great things and He is greatly to be praised. He created a world for us to inhabit, He’s given us life, He’s restored us through the blood of His Son Jesus, and He’s given us a hope and an eternal future. With confidence and great joy, our hearts can say “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
