A Season of Psalms - Psalm 139:14
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
You are no accident. Your birth was not a mishap and your life is not a fluke of nature. You were made for a reason. In The Purpose-Driven Life, Saddleback pastor Rick Warren says “Long before you were conceived by your parents, you were conceived in the mind of God. He thought of you first. It is not fate, nor chance, nor luck, nor coincidence that you are breathing at this very moment. You are alive because God wanted to create you.” Your life has meaning and purpose.
Psalm 139 is perhaps the most oft-quoted psalm of the entire psalter. It’s frequently set to music, used at new births, baby dedications, and even funerals. As Psalm 139 relates, God has been with us since the very beginning and knows us thoroughly. He knows our thoughts and every inclination of our hearts. He sculpted our features and determined our natural abilities and personality. All of His works are wonderful, and David says, “My soul knows it very well.” The good news is that the One who was involved in the minute intricacies of our creation is the same One who is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and thus David says there is no place in the known universe to which we can flee where the Master Creator does not abide. He is everywhere at every time: in us, through us, and around us. He wants to be with us because He is a God of great compassion and love. He made us so He could love us. What a marvelous truth!
God made us so He could show us His love. He showed His love by sending His only begotten Son to the cross to pay the debt for our sinful rebellion against Him. In spite of our faithlessness, He was still faithful. We are precious and special to Him and He won’t let us go. You are His masterpiece and you bear His image. Your life is living proof that God is good!
