A Season of Psalms - Psalm 141:8-10
“But my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord; in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless! Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me and from the snares of evildoers! Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by safely.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Contemporary Christian artist Shawn McDonald has a song called “Eyes Forward.” In the lyrics, he’s being chased by an enemy breathing down his neck, hot on his tail hoping he will stumble and fall. McDonald encourages us in the chorus: Eyes forward/Don’t look at what’s behind/Eyes forward/Don’t take your eyes off the prize.
In Psalm 141, David’s eyes are on God. David begins the psalm calling upon his Rock to answer and hasten to deliver him. In his flight from the snares and traps of evildoers who are viciously hunting him, David says in verse 8, “No matter what happens, God, my eyes are on you.” David thus offers his prayer, likening it to incense before the throne and raising his hands in worship as at the evening sacrifice. Jehoshaphat prayed the same words in 2 Chronicles 20:12 when the Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites mustered against him for war: “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” In times of uncertainty and worry, where are your eyes: on the earth, or on the Maker of heaven and earth? God has promised to shelter us and uphold us with His righteous hand. Though we may walk through a valley fraught with danger and pain, He will be with us, because our God is faithful!
What do we do when we don’t know what to do? “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face; and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” Look full in His wonderful face today!

Pray with me:
Father, You are my Strength when I am weak. You are the Treasure that I seek. You are my all in all. I bask in the shelter and shadow of Your wings. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
