A Season of Psalms - Psalm 145:8-9, 21

Psalm 145:8-9, 21

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made…My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

English Standard Version (ESV)

I enjoy watching my children color. Not only do they use their imaginations when choosing an appropriate color, not only do they try hard to stay within the lines, but when their project is finished, they describe the process of why they chose a specific color and what the picture means to them. You get the whole picture (pardon the pun) when you get the visual description and an oral description of their artistry to boot. The enthusiasm for their creation lasts only a moment, however, before they turn the page to the next picture and begin again.

How would you describe God? If you read all of Psalm 145, you’ll notice that it doesn’t lack for adjectives! This psalm of praise describes God as great, gracious, merciful, slow to anger, abounding in love, glorious, everlasting, faithful, an upholder of the weak, righteous, ever-present, a preserver of His people, and holy, just to name a few! You can never run out of adjectives to describe God, because He is beyond comprehension and description. Our best attempts to describe Him, in reality, don’t do Him justice. He is indescribable and indescribably good! Notice how the psalm recounts God’s goodness, but there’s a sense of responsibility to pass on what God has done, and the legacy of faith, to the next generation so that “they shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and…declare your greatness” (v. 6).

How will our children and grandchildren describe God? He’s revealed Himself in His word. He’s revealed Himself in the world. How will we tell others of His majesty and greatness and splendor? What will we say? The world is waiting to hear. Speak up!

Pray with me:

Lord, You are beautiful beyond description, too marvelous for words, too wonderful for comprehension. I stand in awe of You. Holy God, to whom all praise is due, I stand in awe of You! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
