A Season of Psalms - Psalm 21: 3, 6
Psalm 21:3, 6
“For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head…For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The favorite time of year for any child is Christmas. It’s a season that they look forward to more than any other for several reasons: vacation from school, Christmas lights, cooler weather, and probably most important all, Christmas presents. Their little minds are so focused on all of the wonderful new gifts that they’ll receive on December 25. It’s fun to watch them rejoice in what they’ve received. Sometimes we hear our kids say “This is the best gift EVER!”
Psalm 20 and 21 are closely intertwined. In Psalm 20, the people are cheering on the king as he embarks for war. Their prayer, in essence, is that God will bless him and protect him. In Psalm 21, the prayer has been answered. We see that the king has been the recipient of good gifts: rich blessings, a crown of pure gold, long life, splendor and majesty, unending blessings, and gladness. Because of the king’s faithfulness to God, God lavished him with good things.
Some of us may be still waiting on God to lavish us with good things. But guess what? He already has. He’s given us the best gift ever: eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Christmas gifts come and go, but the gift of Christ is for eternity. He’ll never wear out, break down, or be thrown into a toy box and forgotten. If we let Him, He can have the seat of honor on the throne of our hearts. Is that where He is today?
