A Season of Psalms - Psalm 31: 2-4, 23-24
Psalm 31:2-4, 23-24
“Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; you take me out of the net they had hidden for me, for you are my refuge....Love the Lord, all you his saints! The Lord preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride. Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!”
English Standard Version (ESV)
In my office I have a framed picture of a lighthouse being buffeted by pounding waves. The waves rise high and completely surround the lighthouse on all sides. Standing at the entry door of the lighthouse is a man casually watching the calamity of the waves rising and crashing around the structure. The lighthouse stands strong and immovable, a strong tower in the midst of the chaos. Below the picture is an inscription from Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer. My God is my Rock, in Whom I take Refuge.” Some days I find myself simply staring at this picture, lost in thought. It’s a beautiful picture, but even more beautiful is the truth that it paints.
If you’ve read the Book of Psalms carefully, you’ll find that David was continually praying for deliverance from his hardships and troubles. He cries out to his Fortress and Deliverer, his Rock of refuge, his Strong Tower (see also Psalm 18:2; 62:2; 71:3; 94:22, just to name several). Psalm 31 is no different. Once again, David pleads for deliverance from his own sin and the schemes of his adversaries who are plotting to trap him, slander him, and reproach him at every opportunity. It seems like no matter how hard David tries, he just can’t win. But yet he never gives in and he certainly doesn’t give up. Instead, he draws his strength from the Rock, knowing that God is trustworthy, preserving the faithful and those who wait on Him.
When you face storms, how will you face them with fear or faith? Remember, our God is a Mighty Fortress, a Bulwark never failing. He is our immovable Rock. You can trust Him; He’s faithful to deliver!

Pray with me:
God, You are our Mighty Fortress, our Bulwark that never fails, and we place our complete trust in You. When the storm strikes, enable us to be people of faith, not fear. Strengthen us, we pray, in and through the matchless name of our Source of Strength, Jesus Christ, Amen.
