A Season of Psalms - Psalm 48:1, 4-5, 12-14
Psalm 48:1, 4-5, 12-14
“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, His holy mountain…For behold, the kings assembled; they came on together. As soon as they saw it, they were astounded; they were in panic; they took to flight…Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
“What Can Brown Do For You?” is no longer the slogan for UPS. It’s just another in a long line of slogans that UPS has retired as they’ve rebranded themselves over the years. Perhaps you remember one of their originals: “We run the tightest ship in the shipping business” or “Moving at the speed of business.” Or maybe you’re partial to their current marketing scheme, “We (Heart) Logistics.” Whatever the slogan, UPS (usually) delivers on time, even to the ends of the earth. Their competitors come and go, they may try and fail, but in the parcel-delivery service, UPS is king.
Psalm 48 proclaims the greatness of God the King in the midst of His people. Verse 4 says that “within her citadels God has made himself known as a fortress.” God has done great things for His people, and even when the kings of the earth assemble to make war against the city of God, there is no reason to fear. God will turn His enemies back and drive them away. Indeed, He is Jerusalem’s Strong Tower, its Fortress. He advocates for His people.
We have an Advocate with the Father. His name is Jesus Christ the Righteous. He is the great King that rules in our hearts. He has set up His throne and His kingdom in our hearts, established its walls and ramparts and its defenses against enemy forces. Let us sing His praises and tell of Him to the next generation, that He is our God forever and ever. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised! Is that your song today?
