A Season of Psalms - Psalm 51:10-12
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
In the movie Cast Away, Tom Hanks plays an executive at FedEx en route to an assignment in Malaysia when his plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Hanks’ character, Chuck, washes up on a deserted island, and when his efforts to sail away and establish contact with the outside world fail, he learns how to survive on the uninhabited island on which he would be marooned for the next several years. His closest companion was the volleyball he named Wilson. Chuck was eventually discovered, rescued, and returned home.
Have you ever felt marooned because of your sin? David did. Psalm 51 captures well the agony of David and the wrenching heartache of his struggle after he had committed murder to cover up his adultery with Bathsheba. David felt cast away from the presence of God. He acknowledges his sin, but the sin would still have its consequences: the death of Bathsheba’s child, plus violence and unrest within his kingdom. This is why David would cry out, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Don’t cast me away, but restore me to Yourself and uphold me with a willing spirit.” God, in His grace, answered David’s prayer and he was restored.
Praise God for His grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus our Lord! When we become ensnared in sin, God doesn’t leave us there. When we repent of our wrongdoing, He rescues and restores. Jesus died for that very purpose: to rescue us from the stain of sin and restore us to a right relationship with the Father. But wait, there’s more! God forgets all about our sin. As far as the east is from the west, He remembers our sins no more. Never. Not at all. They never cross His mind. Instead, in Christ His Son, He cleanses us from all unrighteousness, and when we’re cleansed, our hearts become whiter than snow! Praise God for His immeasurable, unfathomable, eternal, matchless grace!

Pray with me the words of “Nothing but the Blood”:
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make us whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. O, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow. No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus. Amen.
