A Season of Psalms - Psalm 65:5, 8

Psalm 65:5, 8

By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas…so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

When was the last time you were truly “in awe?” Being awestruck was a regular occurrence in the Bible. Jacob woke up from his dream of a ladder and said, “How awesome is this place!” Moses sang God’s praises of his “awesome, glorious deeds” after delivering the Israelites from Pharaoh. “Awe came upon every soul” in the early church as the Spirit moved among them. Being “awed” is more than amazement; awe inspires reverential respect mixed with fear and wonder. We tend to misuse the word “awesome” these days to describe anything that is interesting or out of the ordinary: a movie, an athlete, or a ham sandwich. God is awesome, and He is far from ordinary.

This is the theme of Psalm 65. In fact, in this psalm we see a logical progression of our great and awesome God. We see a God of forgiveness (1-4), power (5-8), and grace (9-13). To those who call on Him and draw near, He will answer with awesome deeds of righteousness, so that all live on the earth will stand “in awe at your signs.” Each day the sunrise and the sunset shout for joy to Creator God. He is the Creator of every good and perfect gift that comes from above, and He relishes giving good gifts to His children, to those that follow Him in truth.

The awe-inspiring awesomeness of God is all around us…but it’s also in us, through the Person and work of Jesus Christ. God sent His Son into the world to redeem it through the shedding of His precious blood, that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. A crucified Messiah…if anything should strike awe in our hearts, should it not be Jesus’ great, great love for us? “From sinking sand He lifted me, with tender hand He lifted me; From shades of night to planes of light, O praise His name, He lifted me!

Pray with me today:

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let Thy glory be over all the earth! You are awesome in this place, Mighty God and Abba Father. May Your glory reign in my heart, Your home. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
