A Season of Psalms - Psalm 89:5-8

Psalm 89:5-8

Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord, a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around him? O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?

English Standard Version (ESV)

The music industry is full of one-hit wonders. Remember “Wipe Out” by The Surfaris in 1963? Or “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas in 1974? Who can forget “Achy Breaky Heart” by country musician Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992? But what makes a one-hit wonder? Surprisingly, some music executives are undecided: is it the lack of a comparable follow-up hit? Slumping debut album sales? Other successes that overshadow the song? Whatever the reasoning, these “wonders” had short-lived success, but their songs continue to be played today.

Psalm 89 closes Book Three of the Psalter. What a fitting tribute to our God: He is no one-hit wonder! His love is steadfast and forever (v. 1). The highest heavens praise His wonder and faithfulness in the assembly of angels (v. 5). Nothing in the skies can be compared to the radiance of the Lord! Strength and power are His, victory rests in His right hand. He defends the cause of the needy, the poor, the fatherless, the orphan, the downcast. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. He rules the raging waters, and at His word they are stilled. Truly, His greatness no one can fathom!

How great is our God? Consider the riches of His grace toward us. When we were His enemies, He offered us His Son Jesus as a ransom. He bought us back from the slavery of sin. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God. He loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not die, but have everlasting life. Who is like the Lord our God? None can compare! Blessed be the name of the Lord, from this time forth and forevermore!

Pray with me: Holy God, You are beautiful beyond description. Too marvelous for words, too wonderful for comprehension, like nothing ever seen or heard. Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom? Who can fathom the depths of Your love? Holy God, to whom all praise is due, I stand in awe of You! This is my prayer of praise in Jesus’ name, Amen.
