A Season of Psalms - Psalm 96:4-6

Psalm 96:4-6

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

Wayne Gretzky is “The Great One.” Over the span of his 20-year NHL career, he amassed 894 goals and 1,963 assists, for a total of 2,857 points in 1,487 games. He was the NHL’s leading scorer 10 times, league MVP nine times. To this day, he remains the league’s all-time leading scorer in a career that included stops in Edmonton, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and New York. In the mid-1980s, he led the Edmonton Oilers to 4 Stanley Cup championships in 5 years. After his retirement in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and his famed #99 jersey has been retired league-wide. Truly, Wayne Gretzky was a great player!

Psalm 96 tells of “The Great One” worthy of our praise. He is the Lord; He is great, and greatly to be praised. He deserves our worship because He is the Creator who made the heavens and all that is in them. He is the only God who deserves praise, not idols. Idols are nothing more than the physical formations of man’s imagination, and they never fail to fail. Jeremiah says idols are “like scarecrows in a cucumber field” (Jeremiah 10:5). Idols are nothing to fear, but the Lord is absolutely worthy of fear, the type of fear that acknowledges He is all-powerful and sovereign over all things. He is majestic, and his sanctuary reflects His glory and strength.

If we believe that God is great and greatly to be praised, we can’t help but tell others of His goodness. The best witness is hearts overflowing with gratitude for the great things He has done in us. Today, let us be diligent to ensure His praise is on our lips. Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name!
