A Season of Psalms - Psalm 99:1-3
“The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Game 3 of the 1989 World Series between the Oakland A’s and the San Francisco Giants was about to get underway when a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Bay Area, causing damage to both cities of Oakland and San Francisco. Known as the Loma Prieta earthquake, it caused massive landslides, freeway and building collapses, and ground ruptures. Former Giants first baseman Will Clark, doing his pre-game warm-ups, felt the ground heave beneath him and watched as chunks of concrete fell from Candlestick Park’s upper deck. He sprinted across the field into the stands to rescue his family and escort them to safety. Will Clark still remembers that day. In a 2014 interview in USA Today, Clark said “It’s very fresh. There are a lot of memories you think about and after having been through it and being out on the field and being in the community for those next 10 days, it’s something that’s going to stick with me forever.”
In Psalm 99, the earth trembles and quakes because God is holy. He reigns, sitting enthroned on the cherubim. He is supremely great and He is exalted over all peoples. He is holy, and He commands our worship and praise. In Isaiah’s vision, seraphim stood above God’s throne and cried out “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” The prophets of Baal fell to their faces when the Lord God obliterated Elijah’s offering on the altar. His holiness is too beautiful on which to gaze, His majesty too glorious to consider. In His presence, we cannot help but tremble!
He is holy, but in His greatness and holiness, He speaks to His servants who honor Him as holy by keeping His word. He spoke to Moses and Aaron, as well as Samuel, and He speaks to our hearts today through the Scriptures, His people, His Spirit, and our prayers. He’s calling; can you hear Him? How will you answer?
